World Hypertension Day

Today   is   #WorldHypertensionDay.   Hypertension   is   the   medical   term   for   high   blood   pressure.   High   blood   pressure   can increase your risk of having heart disease of a stroke. Did   you   know   that   your   employees   could   be   living   with   high   blood   pressure?   It   is   more   common   if   they   do   not   live   a   healthy lifestyle,   or   if   thy   experience   stress   at   home   or   at   work.   This   could   have   a   detrimental   effect   on   their   health   and   impact   on their work performance. A healthy employee  equals a healthy business. High   blood   pressure   has   no   obvious   symptoms   to   indicate   that   something   is   wrong.   The   best   way   to   protect   your employees   is   for   them   to   know   their   numbers   –   ensure   they   get   their   blood   pressure   checked   at   least   once   a   year.     However,   finding   time   to   make   an   appointment   to   visit   a   GP   may   be   hard   for   those   who   work   full   time.   This   is   where   we can help. Our Well Checks Well   Checks   are   for   people   who   want   to   receive   a   snapshot   of   their   overall   health   and   wellbeing.   Snapshots   can   be   for individuals or organisations keen to improve employee health and wellbeing. Well   Checks   are   high   quality   health   checks   which   last   20-30   mins.   Well   Checks   provide   people   with   the   knowledge   of   their cardiovascular   risk   factors   which   enables   them   to   make   manageable   lifestyle   changes   so   they   can   live   longer,   happier   and healthier lives as well as being more happy and productive in the workplace. A shocking discovery When   Seamus   McGurk   noticed   that   his   workplace   was   offering   NICHS’s   Well   Checks   to   staff,   he   thought   it   would   be   a good opportunity to get his health checked. However he didn’t know that the screening would change his life… Amy   Coey,   NICHS   Health   Promotion   Officer,   carried   out   Seamus’s   Well   Check.   She   discovered   that   he   had   high   blood pressure and advised him to make an appointment with his GP. Amy   contacted   Seamus   after   his   Well   Check   to   make   sure   he   had   contacted   his   GP.   Seamus   told   her   that   his   doctor   had arranged   for   him   to   wear   a   blood   pressure   monitor   to   record   readings   over   a   24-   hour   period.   The   peak   reading   was 227/112   and   his   blood   pressure   averaged   out   over   this   period   at   188/108!   He   is   now   on   blood   pressure   medication   and being monitored by his GP. Seamus says; I   was   completely   unaware   of   this   (high   blood   pressure)   and   I   am   very   grateful   to   the   NICHS   Well   Check   for picking up this problem. Please pass on my thanks to everyone involved. You could discover something similar… Hundreds   of   people   like   Seamus   are   uncovering   the   hidden   risk   factors   of   high   blood   pressure   –   don’t   put   off   to   tomorrow what   could   save   you   today.   The   NICHS   Health   Promotion   team   are   here   to   help.   High   blood   pressure   is   preventable   but very dangerous if left untreated.
